What Do We Mean by “Strengths”?

When we speak about strengths, it is important to move beyond the idea of extraordinary talent.
Strengths are not limited to being “gifted” in a conventional sense.
They are often quiet, nuanced, and deeply individual.

A child’s strengths might include:
A strong visual memory
A deep interest in specific topics
Sensitivity to patterns, sounds, or textures
A unique sense of humour
Persistence in activities they enjoy
Emotional attunement to people or animals
In neurodivergent children, these strengths may not always align with traditional measures of success—but they are no less valuable.
In fact, they often hold the key to engagement.
