What Is Motor Planning (Praxis)?

Motor planning refers to the brain’s ability to:

  1. Conceptualize an action (understand what needs to be done)

  2. Plan the steps required

  3. Execute the movement in a coordinated way

It is what allows us to:

  • button a shirt

  • climb stairs

  • use a spoon

  • write a sentence

  • imitate an action

  • navigate new environments

For most people, this process happens automatically.

We don’t think about how to tie our shoelaces—we just do it.

But for some children, especially neurodivergent children, this process is not automatic.

It requires effort. It may feel confusing. And it can break down at multiple points.
